Fes

Fes el-Bali, a medieval medina full of life, and its leather tanneries.

The oldest of the imperial cities, founded in the 9th century. Fes el-Bali is one of the largest car-free medinas in the world: a maze of craftsmen, madrasas and fountains.

Getting around

The medina is walked, and getting lost is part of it: the main lanes all run down to the Qarawiyyin. Petit taxis are red. An official guide for the first half day is worth it.

A local tip

Have bissara for breakfast: a hot soup of fava beans with olive oil and cumin, served at small stalls along Talaa Kebira.

Volubilis and Meknes

An hour west, the Roman city of Volubilis and its mosaics, then Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail, and its great Bab Mansour gate.
